However, Gmod is still used for animations today. These animations became their own genre of videos on the platform, with creators like Dasboschitt making sketches known as the Gmod Idiot Box.
Lastly, Garry’s Mod was also used for Machinima, with players making videos of characters from other games in all sorts of situations. Causing the game to continue to flourish and use all of the prospects that Gmod had, and more. However, the game ended up becoming too big to continue supporting, through crowdfunding and other means, the developers of GmodTower made Tower Unite.
This title was a social world where players could interact with other players, and play minigames. However, one of the most important games that began in Gmod was GmodTower. More titles also spawned from this game, with Dark RP being an older version of what would become RP Servers in GTA. As well as Prop Hunt, which became so popular that other titles like Call of Duty started implementing it in their titles, were made originally in Garry’s Mod using CS:S assets. Trouble in Terrorist Town, which was a whodunnit game that played similarly to Among Us, and was the original version of the game. The purple and Magenta textures and floating “ ERROR” signs are developer textures from the source engine, but they’ve become synonymous with the title, like Counter-Strike: Source is used in many of the assets for other game modes. The ability to import content into the game, and use it in Garry’s Mod is also part of why the title took off so easily, and Why Gmod and Counter-Strike Source are so intertwined as titles. The game was also published by Valve and will pull assets from games that are installed onto the computer when opening GMod. The game is fueled by the creativity of the players in the game, and they’re able to make whatever they want without fear of being brought down upon by IP holders since it’s inside of a game where all the content is free. As the game allows players to make their own game modes, and upload them onto the Steam Workshop. However, while a creative sandbox title like this seems barebones, Gmod’s versatility as a title is its claim to fame. Made by Facepunch Studios, and named after its founder, Garry Newman, Garry’s Mod is a sandbox title where players can do whatever they want, whether it’s interacting with the physics of the game, or building their own contraptions.
Valve has also made their filmmaking software which also runs on the source engine, free for anyone to try out. However, there’s one game that’s turned the source engine into a playground for all players to create their own titles, and that game is called Garry’s Mod. With Valve making multiple genres of games, from Zombie shooters to Wormhole puzzlers. The versatility of the engine is unparamount to any other gaming engine on PC. All of Valve’s previous games after the release of Half-Life 2 have run on the original source engine.
Source 2 has most recently come out with Half-Life Alyx, and it’s the only title that’s been used with the engine. While other companies like Activision are working on different engines for each Call of Duty, and Epic Games is moving onto Unreal Engine 5, Valve has stayed content with their titles.
Valve’s Source engine is something of a masterpiece in game design, while it was high end when Half-Life 2 launched on steam for the first time, the thing about the source engine is that it’s one of the most long-lasting engines when it comes to PC gaming. By Cole Travis in General | Sep, 10th 2021
